Sports kit recycling to help struggling families

A sports kit recycling project has been launched in Jersey to help parents struggling with the cost of living and help children who might otherwise miss out on sport.

Jersey Sport is working with social enterprise Acorn which will collect and sort the kit before selling it at a discounted price at its shop.

Jersey Sport's inclusion and intervention officer Claudia Andrade said "financial barriers" could prevent families from getting involved in sport.

She said giving kit in good condition a second life could "really help families take part".

Ms Andrade said people may have grown out of kit or have equipment for an activity they were no longer involved in.

She urged people to see what items might be forgotten at home.

"Sometimes we are surprised at what we have at home that we do not really use."

The partnership asked for kit including trainers, shorts, tracksuits, running kit, football and rugby boots, along with specialist equipment such as tennis rackets.

Ms Andrade said the project also encouraged reusing and recycling kit while supporting employment for people with a disability or health condition at Acorn.

Kit can be dropped off at collection points including La Moye, Les Landes and VCP schools, Les Quennevais Sports Centre in St Brelade and Springfield Sports Centre in St Helier.
